Oh, thank God they clarified. The Kingdom Where Nobody Dies is a novel—in serial form, no less—which means, try to keep up, the chapters appear in sequence. They don’t pause to explain themselves, because nothing says “gripping fiction” like a chapter stopping mid-sentence to recap the plot for people who skipped straight to installment seven. If you haven’t read what came before, don’t strain yourself: just start with the first installment in the archive. Revolutionary advice, I know. If you have read what came before, congratulations on understanding how stories work—the next page is below, where pages usually are. And if you want to keep reading, you’ll need to subscribe. New installments are released every Monday, because nothing says “must-read serial fiction” like syncing your reading schedule to the start of the workweek.
In other words, welcome to Substack.
In wading through the AI slop consulting the internet for advice on what a header paragraph should contain, I was offered such brilliant advice as “tell them it’s a novel in serial form” and “the chapters appear in sequence and—gasp—should be read in sequence. And all this time, I thought I ripped the book open to a random page and pissed on it. In order? I might’ve been lining the rabbit’s cage wrong, all this time. Should I be teaching him how to read? Although I’m not sure I want him absorbing much of Hillbilly Elegy. But I digress: I’m on Substack now, for my tastemaking zero readers. Where I remind them, too, that selling out is still stupid. Or as I end the wonderful email digest no one’s reading: Russell is free today. Russell is free every day. Russell is a complete slut and this button is here because the platform insists on it. Nothing is paywalled. Every chapter is free, every Monday, no exceptions, no bonus content for supporters. If you pledge, you’re not buying anything—no early access, no special treatment, no influence on the story. You’re just giving money to a writer who already writes for free and isn’t about to stop. Art is free. Attention is the only subscription that matters.
